Today's Blog

Been trying to write something that a person who would come across my blog could remotely relate to... So what the heck.... I'll write about a good movie I saw recently... Little Miss Sunshine...
I was almost not going to see the movie... The title almost put me off cos I assumed that the story might be some crappy goody goody clichéd chewed out fag- you get the idea.... Then my friend rahul told me that it was good... Me n rahul have taken it upon ourselves to see as many good movies as possible- new and old before leaving college- which happens in a month, sadly- and so we tell each other about any info that we can find on good movies... Then I promptly go on orkut to update my list of favourite movies feeling gratified that I am one more step closer to some unknown goal- maybe a place in the hall of fame of good movie watchers, if ever there is such a place.... I pride myself in doing this... As though watching a movie by Kubrick or Kurosawa or tarantino elevates me above the common masses... Silly ain't it... Wait a minute.... I don't need to be so hard on myself.... I do intensely enjoy some of these movies... I do learn from them from time to time too...
So coming back to the thing I started to say- Little miss sunshine... mmm well... The opening is kidilam... The different members of the family are shown, their contrasts and situations are brought out in tiny instances... The little girl olive who fantasizes winning a beauty pageant while watching one on video, the father who is a self help guru(or guru aspirant so to speak) of sorts who is trying- maybe a bit too hard, the grandpa who shoots heroin, the son, brother of the girl, teenager who is dead set on making flight school and having taken a vow of silence till his goal is reached, the mother who gets things done and is the sensible one, the grandpa who shoots heroine, frank, moms brother who is a suicide attemptee, Proust scholar, gay and suffering from unrequited love for a boy grad student. The family end up on a trip to take olive to California to take part in a beauty pageant for kids.... The story unfolds en route... The way in which the bare essence of each character is squeezed out and pasted on to the screen is magnificent... I understood one thing from this movie.... When someone manages to bring out the depth in real people out on the movie screen, the results are beautiful. We begin to appreciate how complex and wonderful each one of us in his own way. And as images can be much more eloquent than the most simple of words the experience is something that becomes part of us... Do watch the movie... U wont regret it... It is on the lighter side and yet not at all shallow... Interesting thing that one of the characters in the movie says- he talks about Marcel Proust- Proust said that as he looked back on his life- he is thankful for the times that he suffered, because those were the times that he learned a lot about everything, the times that he were happy were a total waste in that regard, so in effect be happy for the times that you suffer, cos there ain't no better time to learn about life... Strange advice but I felt that piece of thought beautiful...
